World Athlete (WA) has nominated the Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan for the 2022 Women’s World Athlete of the year. They noted that Amusan and other nominees were selected by an international panel of athletic experts which involved representatives from all six continental areas of the World Athletics.

Tobi Amusan became the first Nigerian track and field athlete and the second in history to defend a Commonwealth Games 100m hurdles title successfully. She won a gold medal at two editions of the games.

She is a 25-year-old who broke the 100meter world record at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon, the USA, in a record time of 12.12 seconds. Tobi became the only Nigerian athlete in history to complete a grand slam of titles at the continental, Commonwealth and world levels after winning gold at the 22nd African Athletics Championship in Mauritius in June and the World Athletics Championship at Oregon in August.

The record holder, Tobi Amusan, insisted yesterday that she is honoured to have been considered among the best 10 women in the world for the outgoing year. When the news got to her, she was momentarily lost for words to describe her inner feelings. After recovery from the ecstasy, she said these words: “Through the grace of God, I have achieved so many ‘first by a Nigerian’ and this is yet another one. I’m honoured to be selected as a World Athlete of the year nominee and the first Nigerian ever to reach this height.”

World Athletics said votes would be cast online through the World Athletics’ social media platforms. They said, “Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube this week; a ‘like’ on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.”

The body said the vote would close at midnight on Monday, October 31, and the winners will be revealed on World Athletics’ social media platforms in early December.
